This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer, and you may find yourself spending as much time outside as possible. With the nice weather, you want to be sure to soak up some vitamin D while partaking in your favorite summer activities, but ensure you are staying healthy and safe while doing it. With a summer full of plans like BBQs, pool parties and family gatherings, it may be easy to indulge in unhealthy meals and forget about summer safety tips.

Here are some tips for staying safe and healthy this summer:

Stay hydrated: As the temperatures rise, try to stay away from drinks that will dehydrate you and make you thirstier such as soda and alcohol, and drink plenty of water. Carrying a water bottle with you and even marking the water bottle with how much you’d like to drink by a certain time is a good reminder to stay hydrated.

Sunscreen: Sunscreen should be applied before you are exposed to the sun and then reapplied multiple times throughout the day. Don’t forget to put sunscreen on places like your ears and scalp, which can be easily forgotten. You can also protect your scalp and ears by wearing a hat.

Eat healthy: Throughout all your fun summer plans it is important to remember to eat healthy. Summer party menus seem to consist of hot dogs, mayonnaise-laden salads and chips, so be sure to fill up on more nutritious snacks rather than indulging in too many franks. When entertaining, put out healthier fare like fresh fruit and nuts, such as pistachios, which are a great party nut. Or, if you are a guest, have a satiating snack, like a handful of pistachios, before you leave so you don’t overdo it once you get to the party.

Have fun: Most importantly, get out and enjoy the weather! Explore the great outdoors and create memories with family and friends. Browse the web or travel magazines to find fun weekend getaways and day-trips near you, from hiking trails to camping and picnic-perfect parks.
